#70. Falling Up
Crashings

Release Date: February 24, 2004

In JFH's initial review of Crashings, the writer said that Falling Up wore their influences on their sleeves, but combined them in new and interesting ways. This seems like an over-simplified description of an album that kickstarted my teenage obsession with Christian rock, and Falling Up in particular. Most every song is catchy, but not in a cliched, poppy way. Even "Broken Heart," the most straightforward song, has that strange but awesome guitar line that might be in the key of Z. As the review mentioned, the band draws from diverse styles, but that wasn't my impression at the time. Sure, I heard some rap and electronica influences, but, overall, I saw this album as the most focused and well-thought-out bunch of songs I'd heard up to that point. Falling Up may have truly discovered their sound on Captiva and Fangs!, but Crashings was a solid introduction to an honest and ridiculously creative band.
